Constructed Ecologies

Concrete Thinking for a Sustainable World Competition 2009

2nd Place

With Brantley Highfill

Constructed Ecologies transforms hard, urban flood channels into diverse and programmed landscapes. Conventional concrete applications deny the natural gradient necessary to sustain biologically productive environments, restrict public access, and exhaust water management resources. By using permeable concrete planks, Constructed Ecologies creates an adaptable system that provides flood protection while creating a porous landscape for natural habitats and recreational use. The system operates at the land-water interface and negotiates between the ecological qualities of each to construct a transitional environment.
